California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL/CLAD) Added Authorization

Added Authorization: Upon completion, teachers will be recommended for the specialized certification in Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD). Can be taken concurrently with a preliminary teaching credential, or as an added authorization by teachers who have a credential.

Overview

Explore your calling through a career in multilingual teaching—helping shape lives, building understanding, and serving students from diverse backgrounds. As our world becomes more connected, the ability to communicate across languages and cultures is an ever-growing need.

Through a 12-unit curriculum, this added authorization will prepare you to support first and second language learners with intentional and impactful education. Upon completion of this program, teachers can expect to have gained the following skills:

  • Understanding of language acquisition and multilingual development
  • Ability to design integrated language and content instruction
  • Use of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching practices
  • Skills in assessing and supporting multilingual learners

The CLAD added authorization can be obtained while earning your preliminary credential (MAT or MCIRL) or as an added authorization for educators who already hold a valid California teaching credential. This program can be taken as a standalone credential or within the Master of Arts in Teaching or Master's in Curriculum and Instruction programs.

Be Confident in Your Calling

For teachers, a diverse classroom shouldn’t be an added responsibility, but an opportunity to provide spaces for multilingual students to be seen, understood, and able to thrive. Multilingual teaching allows for the whole classroom to be included through an understanding of learning a new language, how culture shapes learning, and valuing the strengths students already bring.

At ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç, we’re here to partner with you in that calling. You’ll learn within an environment where your goals, faith, and passion are shared and valued. You’ll be supported in your learning as you strive to support future students.

Establish Your Multilingual Credibility

Due to an increasingly competitive educational sector, school districts are looking for multilingual teachers and specialists. The CLAD certification will prepare you for the diverse atmosphere of today’s education system with the skills and the qualifications needed to support multilingual learners.

¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç offers cohort options for schools and groups seeking to earn their CLAD certification together.

Learn on Your Schedule

The fully online curriculum supports full-time working educators or those earning a preliminary credential — so you can continue moving forward without putting your life on hold. All coursework is grounded in real-classroom application, equipping you with strategies to support multilingual learners with care and confidence.

You can complete this in-demand credential in as few as four months.

Build a Lasting Network of Support

Throughout your time at ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç, you will be mentored and guided from faculty, master teachers, and career counselors. ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç’s Education Associates alumni network will keep you connected long after graduation, while further professional development opportunities are available as you advance in your career.

Do I need to already hold a teaching credential to enroll?

Candidates may enroll while completing their preliminary teaching credential or as practicing teachers. However, a valid California teaching credential is required in order to be recommended for the English Learner Authorization (CLAD).

What will I be authorized to do after completing the program?

Candidates are recommended to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for the English Learner Authorization (CLAD), which authorizes instruction for English learners, including English Language Development (ELD) and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE).

Is the program fully online?

Yes, the program is fully online and designed to support working educators.

What kind of assignments or fieldwork are included?

Coursework includes applied assignments such as lesson design, assessment, and instructional planning for multilingual learners. For candidates in a concurrent MAT program, fieldwork is embedded within credential requirements. For standalone candidates, approximately 20–30 hours of fieldwork are required.

¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç is a Christian university, but I am not a Christian. Would I feel out of place in this program?

We welcome and encourage people of all backgrounds as students in our programs. Issues that relate to faith may be discussed in some classes, and engaging in discussion with individuals with alternative points of view will be encouraged as learning opportunities. Students will work within a learning community that is supportive academically, spiritually, and emotionally.

How do district partnerships work?

¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç has agreements with districts throughout the San Diego and Bakersfield areas. For students enrolled online outside of these locations, ¹ú²ú¾çÂ鶹¾ç will partner with your local school district to place you for your fieldwork and student teaching hours. You need to maintain a 3.0 GPA at all times. If you receive a C- or less in a course, you'll need to repeat the course.

How many courses can I take each quad?

We advise students not to take more than two courses per quad. We purposely limit the number of courses you can take in eight weeks so you can thoughtfully process the contents of each course and be ready to apply to teaching. If you’re working or teaching full time as an intern, you’ll be advised to take one course per quad.
